A Pakistani student at Cornell University has translated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Sindhi language. The full text and audio versions of the Sindhi translation is now available on the United Nations website.
When the UN High Commissioner for Human Right’s 10-year project #Standup4humanrights was initiated in December 2017, Sindhi language was not included in the list of languages in which the declaration was to be promoted across the globe, primarily because there was no proper translation of the Universal Declaration in Sindhi Language.
Sarang Mangi, a graduate student pursuing Master of Public Administration at Cornell University, contacted the offices of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Universal Human Rights Initiative (UHRI), seeking inclusion of Sindhi language in the project. He was then asked by the co-founder of the UHRI, Dr. Noah Bardach, to translate the Universal Declaration in Sindhi Language.
As an outcome of his efforts, the Universal Declaration is now available in Sindhi language and can be accessed through the OHCHR’s official website in text and audio formats.
Pakistan is among the signatory counties to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, the Universal Declaration had yet to be disseminated across the country in regional languages owing to lack of translated versions.
Rights activists in Sindh can now refer to the translated draft to raise awareness about the declaration among local communities. Meanwhile, activists hope that very soon translated versions of the declaration in other regional language will also be made available for the country.
