ISLAMABAD: The Accountability Court resumed on Monday the hearing of Al Azizia and Flagship corruption references against ousted Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif.
The hearing session was presided over by Judge Mohammad Bashir who on the start of the session inquired about Nawaz’s counsel Khawaja Haris’ presence. Haris’ colleague then informed the court that he (Haris) was on his way.
The court then questioned that when the Islamabad High Court (IHC) will take up the Sharif family’s pleas against the Avenfield verdict. To which the secondary counsel replied that their appeals are scheduled to be heard tomorrow.
The court then adjourned the session till the appearance of Khawaja Haris.
After a brief break, the hearing was resumed and Judge Bashir then observed that he would wait till IHC’s instructions tomorrow.
The session was then adjourned till August 1.
Previously, the court had sentenced Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar to jail in the Avenfield properties reference.
The remaining cases pertain to Al-Azizia Steel Mills and the Hill Metal Establishment, and offshore companies including Flagship Investment Limited.
Nawaz was sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison and slapped a £8 million fine (Rs 1.3 billion) while Maryam was sentenced to eight years with a £2 million fine (Rs 335 million). Maryam’s husband, Capt (r) Safdar, was sentenced to one year in prison.
Nawaz and his sons Hussain and Hasan are accused in all three references whereas Maryam and Safdar were accused in the Avenfield reference only.
